Modern "BluesThem”

“Bluesthem” is a word derived from the term “Bluesman” used to describe folks who traveled, studied, and organized through the genre movement of the “Blues”.

Rooting through analysis of Angela Davis in the text “Blues Legacies and Black Feminism” contemporary Queer/Gender Variant performers and culture workers, are contextualized by the lives and legacies of some of the Blues foremost figures including Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Gladys Bentley. IE: We are here because our ancestors are here.

Black People Tell Black History: “The Blues”

BPTBH is a teach-in organized by activist Ericka Hart and Ebony Donnely where folks are invited to create a 5 min teach-in video on any topic pertaining to Black History. In 2022, Sweet Corey-Bey participated submitting a video work they edited, filmed, wrote, performed, and recorded on “The Blues” for Instagram.

Sweet x DC JAzz Fest

DC Jazz Festival and The Corner at Whitman-Walker co-presented, Jazz at the Corner, a concert series presenting jazz ensembles in performance, part of Stay Alive to Life, an exhibition and program of events, on resilience in times of COVID-19, organized in cooperation with Kadist, The Museum of Dreams, and Goethe Institute. On June 17, 2021 the series featured "Sweet" Corey-Bey and their band Black Folks Don't Swim?. This video features a performance of the Midnight Theme, an ode Corey-Bey penned in honor of the spirit of the historic U St corridor in Washington, DC.
